One A Day - On This Day in 2004

Irvine CA Toys R Us

On this day in 2004 I waited in line to buy a Nintendo DS. It was launch day so there was a lot of action at our local Toys R Us. It's a great system and still going strong. It will soon be replaced by a really cool 3-D version (not like the crappy Virtual Boy).

One A Day - On This Day in 2004

Irvine CA Tony's Car

On this day in 2004 we picked up the latest Grand Theft Auto and raced back to the office to play it. It's always fun to be around a bunch of gamers when a major release comes out. Oh on that note, go buy Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2. It came out yesterday for the PS3 and Xbox 360 and I worked on it.

One A Day - On This Day in 2009

San Francisco CA The ILM Halloween Party

On this day in 2009 we were at the ILM Halloween Party. We dressed up as Typing of the Dead Characters and found a Zombie to pose with. It's a fun party and it's one of the things that we will miss about not working for Lucas but the new adventures we are having outweigh anything that we miss from our past.

One A Day - On This Day in 2002

Los Angeles CA A Nintendo Power Event

On this day in 2002 a few of us trekked out to LA to go to a Nintendo Power Fanboy event. It wasn't an industry thing, it was open to the general public but I think it was by invite only. It was fun but not as fun as E3.

One A Day - Not realy on this day

Christmas Day 1980 Our 70s looking livingroom

On Christmas morning of 1980 I got Pitfall! and my video game playing world turned upside down. What an amazing game! Animating sprites, more screens than you can count and bi-linear gameplay (you could go left or right). I played the game all day and ended up getting a score high enough to send in to receive the Pitfall! patch.

One A Day - On This Day in 2004

Irvine CA Point of View Inc.

On this day in 2004 we were doing a video shoot for a video game we were making. we wanted to splash the screen with "vomit" at a certain point in the game and so we decided to shoot fake vomit against a piece of plexi-glass with a green screen behind it. It worked pretty well but we didn't end up using it or even shipping the game for that matter. Here is me with an accordion like container with fake vomit in it. I was going to shoot it through a small hole in a green screen.

Here is the aftermath of one of the shots.

Tony, Steve and Jesse discuss how to make the effect better.

Take 2. this one needs to fill the screen!

Brian likes the method behind the madness

Here I am excited about a successful "vomit"

One A Day - On This Day in 2002

Irvine CA The Irvine Spectrum

On this day in 2002 The Scorpion King was on the shelves. It was our first original game. It had it's flaws but we worked hard and met our goal so we went to The Irvine Spectrum to celebrate by looking at it on the shelves and going to lunch.

Here we are pooring into the game store to see our accomplishment

Here we are at Dave and Busters. It was a fun tradition to all go to lunch on the day the game appeared in stores. I wasn't able to carry this tradition on at LucasArts. The teams were too big, I didn't have a budget and people tend to get let go after a game is done and before it is on the shelves. I am hoping to carry this tradition on the next place I work.

One A Day - On This Day in 2007

San Francisco CA The Lumiere Theater

On this day in 2007 Donna and I went to the San Francisco premier of The King of Kong. It was being presented by the director. It is a great documentary about people trying to get the Donkey Kong high score. If you look closely you will see Billy Mitchel on the left. He is prominently featured in this film as the villain who will do anything to retain the high score. A week ago my post featured Billy in real life years before this film was made. If you haven't seen it I am sure you will like it if you read my blog.

One A Day - Not really on this day

Los Angeles CA E3 1999

In 1999 I got to go to my first E3. My friend got Donna and I in and it was a blast. I had no idea that the following year I would be attending E3 on my own pass. E3 is sensory overload. I picked this shot because it shows the Sega Dreamcast set up. For many the Dreamcast is known for being an incredible system that had too short of a life. The death of the Dreamcast marked the end of Sega's Hardware days.

One A Day - On This Day in 2003

Las Vegas NV Classic Gaming Expo

On this day in 2003 Donna and I were still in Las Vegas. They had a classic gaming museum with a lot of cool stuff to look at. Out of all of the cool things I chose to post a picture of an Asteroids costume... This piece of history just shows how big video games were back then. Asteroids was so popular that some kid wanted to dress up as an asteroid for Halloween. Not the guy in the space ship shooting the asteroids, not the triangular space ship (which is arguably the star of the game) but the asteroid. Here's your candy crater face.

One A Day - On This Day in 2003

Las Vegas NV Classic Gaming Expo

On this day in 2003 Donna and I were at the Classic Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. It is one of my favorite conventions. There are many things to buy, many games to play and lots of famous people to see (well famous to me). In this photo you can see a bearded man. His name is Billy Mitchell and he is the best Pac-Man player in the world and once of the best Donkey Kong players in the world. Remember his perfect beard because there will be another post featuring him this month but it will be from the future (at least compared to when this was taken).

One A Day - On this day in 2000

Los Angeles CA 2000
Donna and I are at the 2000 E3. We are taking our picture with the Deuce display. Deuce was a passion project that just never made it out the door.

One A Day - On This Day in 2007

Orange CA Our Soon to be rental house

On this day in 2007 we continued to pack up the house and video game room for the big move. We had to cut our stuff down and could only take about 1/5th of it. We sold about 1/4 of our stuff (big stuff that took up a lot of space) and put the rest in storage. It is patiently awaiting our trip back to Southern California sometime in the future.

One A Day - On This Day in 2004

San Jose CA GDC

On this day in 2004.......Epic Fail was in the air. Everyone saw it but no one did anything about it. 4 years later Apple did it right and the rest is history.

One A Day - On This Day in 2007

Irvine CA Point of View Inc.

On this day in 2007 I was retrieving my arcade games from my former employer. Luckily Rob had a truck and offered to help get them to my house. It was a sad day but many of the adventures you have read about on this blog would have never have happened if that day didn't set them in motion. There can be good in everything, you just have to find it.

One A Day - On This Day in 2004

Orange CA Our House

On this day in 2004 Josh played Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade on our Hanaho Mame Machine. I don't think Oma approved of the cartoon violence.

One A Day - On This Day in 2003

Orange CA Our House

On this day in 2003 Josh learned how to play Robotron: 2084. It's a lot tougher than most of the games he is used to playing. He enjoyed it. He also enjoys playing the Mario Brothers Machine. Sadly these machines don't fit in our apartment in San Francisco so they are sitting in a storage unit in Santa Ana.

One A Day - On This Day in 2003

Milpitas CA Midway Home Entertainment (old Atari Games Headquarters)

On this day in 2003 we took a road trip while at GDC. We were on our way to the airport and decided to take a bit of extra time to check out the recently closed Atari Headquarters. I took a few pictures but not near enough. There were a few trucks and a cool hedge that spelled out Atari but that was about it.

One A Day - On This Day in 2006

Irvine CA Point of View Inc.

On this day we played Guitar Hero. It's what all the cool kids were playing before Rock Band.
